Does Shilajit Increase Fertility in Women and Men?

Can Shilajit Increase Fertility?

shilajit is a natural mineral supplement extracted from the mountains of Central Asia. It has been used for thousands of years in the oldest medicine in the world: Ayurvedic medicine. This is because of the many health benefits that Shilajit offers. In this article, we take a closer look at the effects that Shilajit can have on fertility. For example, according to research, Shilajit may help to increase the levels of progesterone and sperm cells in the body.

Shilajit Increases Progesterone

Progesterone is a hormone mainly produced by the ovaries in women and the adrenal glands in men. It plays an important role in the regulation of the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and the health of the reproductive system. Low progesterone levels can lead to a number of health problems, including infertility, miscarriages, endometriosis and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). With regard to fertility, a low progesterone level may prevent ovulation (ovulation) or the uterus may be in a worse condition for a fertilized egg to implant.

Fulvic acid

Shilajit contains several substances that can contribute to an increase in progesterone levels. Firstly, Shilajit contains Fulvic acid, a substance that improves the transport of nutrients through cell membranes and promotes the absorption of minerals in the body. Fulvic acid can also help restore the balance between hormones by improving the function of the adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing hormones such as progesterone. Among other things, this can be helpful for women experiencing hormonal imbalances, such as during menopause.

Magnesium and zinc

In addition to Fulvic acid, Shilajit contains various minerals that are important for the production of progesterone, such as zinc and magnesium. Zinc is an essential mineral involved in many processes in the body, including hormone production. Magnesium is then involved in progesterone production and regulating the menstrual cycle.

stress-reducing

Another way Shilajit can boost hormone balance and progesterone production is that it can help reduce stress levels. Stress can disrupt hormone balance and reduce progesterone production. Shilajit contains adaptogenic substances that help protect the body against stress and reduce the stress response. This may contribute to an increased production of progesterone.

In our article: "Is Shilajit good for Vrouwen?" delve deeper into the research on how Shilajit can lower stress.

Research on Shilajit and increasing progesterone

A study in 2015 called: “Effects of Asphaltum (Shilajit) Combined with Vitamin E and Selenium on the Reproductive Parameters of Female Rabbits”, investigated the effect of Shilajit and Vitamin E on hormone balance in rodents. This study showed the incredible potency for Shilajit and regulating hormone balance and progesterone. Over a period of 32 days, the study results showed a significant increase in the hormone progesterone. Progesterone was especially significantly higher when Shilajit was taken in combination with Vitamin E and Selenium.

Direct effect of Shilajit on fertility in men and women

The research "The spermatogenic and ovogenic effects of chronically administered Shilajit to rats"investigated the effect of chronic administration of Shilajit on fertility in male and female rats. The research was conducted because Shilajit has been used for centuries in traditional Ayurvedic medicine to improve fertility and promote sexual health.

The study was conducted in male and female rats that were divided into three groups: a control group and two groups that received different doses of Shilajit. Shilajit doses were 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg body weight. Shilajit was administered daily for 45 days. After 45 days, the rats were euthanized. Testes and ovaries were examined to assess the effects of Shilajit on fertility.

The effect of Shilajit on male fertility

The results showed that Shilajit led to an increase in sperm count in male rats. The highest dose of Shilajit (200 mg/kg) resulted in a significantly higher sperm count compared to the control group. In addition, Shilajit improved sperm motility, with an increase of 17% at the 100 mg/kg dose and 23% at the 200 mg/kg dose. Sperm morphology also improved in rats given Shilajit, with an increase of 28% at the 100 mg/kg dose and 37% at the 200 mg/kg dose. Morphology in sperm refers to the shape of the sperm cells. A sperm cell with a poorly formed head can reach the egg cell, but has difficulty penetrating the egg cell. An improvement in morphology is therefore a very important finding as the positive effect that Shilajit has on male fertility.

The effect of Shilajit on female fertility

To determine the effects of Shilajit on female fertility, the researchers observed the number of rats that reached oestrus and the number of eggs produced over 5 days after oral administration of Shilajit for 6 weeks.

The oestrus period, which does not occur in humans, is the most fertile stage in the menstrual cycle of rats. At this stage, the rat is most susceptible to fertilization. The more female rats in one of the 3 groups reached this period, the higher the fertility of this group. This is therefore an important indication to see to what extent Shilajit has an effect on fertility.

The results showed that the group receiving a dose of 25 mg had a similar number of rats in the estrus period as the control group. However, the group that received a dose of 100 mg had a significantly higher number of rats in the oestrous period than the control group. This was three times higher than the control group. These results suggest that Shilajit enhances the development of immature eggs into fertile eggs and may increase ovulation frequency.

Based on these findings, the researchers conclude that Shilajit could potentially be used as a natural remedy to improve fertility in both men and women. However, further research is needed to determine its safety and effectiveness in humans.
