Does Shilajit Improve Skin Health?

Skin Health and Anti Aging by Shilajit

shilajit is a powerful, natural substance that has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. Extracted from rocks high in the Himalayan mountains, Shilajit is composed of unique plant species in a centuries-long decomposition process. Shilajit is rich in minerals and other nutrients that are beneficial to the health of the body. But did you know that shilajit can also improve the skin? In this article, we will take a closer look at the benefits of shilajit for the skin.

According to research, your skin can be protected by Shilajit against harmful environmental elements such as UV radiation. In addition, the supplement helps with hydration and suppleness of the skin, which leads to young skin.

Shilajit is rich in antioxidants that scavenge free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that are produced by chemical changes within a cell. This becomes a problem when they build up inside the cell and damage other molecules in the body. You can think of lipids, proteins and DNA. A consequence of this process is that your skin ages and other health conditions arise. Shilajit can be a healthy solution for this.

Fulvic acid

A good example of a strong antioxidant in Shilajit is “Fulvic acid”. This antioxidant is found in very high concentrations in Shilajit. Fulvic acid is a type of antioxidant that is powerful on the one hand and has a significant ability to cross the blood-brain barrier on the other. According to reports, it also has the ability to sniff through and track down free radicals, described in the study “Shilajit induced morphometric and functional changes in mouse peritoneal macrophages Phytother” from 1995. Shilajit's antioxidant properties depend on its concentration; larger doses provide more pronounced protection against free radicals, as described in the study, among other things “Free radicals, oxidative stress and antioxidant defense” from 2000 and “Effects of shilajit on biogenic free radicals”. 1995. Current research provides unique evidence that shilajit, through its exceptional antioxidant properties, significantly contributes to the maintenance of normal oxidant and antioxidant status.

Shilajit improves microcirculation of the skin

Regarding the skin, a fairly recent study was also conducted in 2019. The study is called: “Skin Transcriptome of Middle-Aged Women Supplemented With Natural Herbo-mineral Shilajit Shows Induction of Microvascular and Extracellular Matrix Mechanisms”. In this study, 45 women were administered Shilajit for a period of 14 weeks. The female volunteers were predominantly white-skinned with 1 volunteer of Asian descent and 6 women of African descent. All women were between the ages of 30 and 65 at the time of the study.

This study was designed to measure the effects Shilajit has on skin microcirculation. Microcirculation is the blood that flows through tiny capillaries under the skin. Microcirculation largely determines the health of your skin and ensures:

  • Oxygen in your skin cells.
  • Promotes lymphatic drainage. This ensures the removal of waste.
  • Removal of free radicals. Free radicals are aggressive substances in the body that can cause damage to cells and tissue.
  • Cleanses the skin of impurities.

When the lymphatic system is clogged due to poor microcirculation, toxins are released through the skin, causing irritation, acne, dryness and fine wrinkles. The skin looks renewed when there is healthy blood flow and blood purification, which is supported by a functional lymphatic system and microcirculation.

In the study, the women were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was a placebo group, group 2 received 125mg Shilajit per day, and group 3 received 250mg Shilajit per day. Volunteers were expected to visit 6 times during this study and were examined using different methods:

  • Documentation of medication, medical history and nutritional information.
  • At each visit, photographs of the face were taken with neutral facial expressions and no skin make-up. These were digital photos of the face (front, left and right perspective) taken by a high-end camera.
  • Skin biopsies were taken from the left upper arm.
  • Any self-reported deviations were recorded.

The results of the study showed that the Shilajit supplemented groups had a dramatic improvement in skin microcirculation after 14 weeks. The group that received 250mg of Shilajit per day had the best results. Not unimportantly, no side effects have been observed after 14 weeks of supplementation.
