Cholesterol and Triglycerides (Lipid Profile)
In short: The amounts of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) and triglycerides are combined in a lipid profile. This lipid profile can be used to determine whether someone has an increased risk of developing heart and liver disease.
In addition to a special diet, people with a poor lipid profile, high total cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol levels are often prescribed Simvastatin. Because Shilajit is known for lowering cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, research was done in 2012 on this topic in the study: “Effect of Shilajit on Lipid Profile of Hyperlipidemic Albino Rats and Comparison with Simvastatin”. 30 male albino rats were randomly divided into 3 groups. Group 1 was the control group, group 2 received Shilajit and group 3 received Simvastatin in order to compare the effectiveness of Shilajit with Simvastatin medication.
Shilajit successfully lowered total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, according to the findings. Both drugs are equally effective in lowering triglyceride and total cholesterol levels. Compared to Shilajit, simvastatin is slightly more successful in lowering LDL and raising HDL cholesterol. Shilajit and cholesterol in normal people
In 2003, a study was conducted among 30 volunteers between the ages of 16 and 30. The researchers in the study called “SHILAJIT: EVALUTION OF ITS EFFECTS ON BLOOD CHEMISTRY OF NORMAL HUMAN SUBJECTS” gave 20 volunteers 2 grams of Shilajit per day and 10 volunteers a placebo for 45 days.
The results of this study also showed that total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol were strongly reduced in the volunteers who were supplemented with Shilajit.
Shilajit protected during a heart attack
Shilajit can play a protective role when a heart attack occurs. After a heart attack, there is less damage to the heart when supplemented with Shilajit. In 2014, a closer look was taken at the effect that Shilajit can have on the heart when a heart attack occurs. called the study “Cardioprotective Effect of Mumie (Shilajit) on Experimentally Induced Myocardial Injury” divided rats into 3 groups and 3 subgroups. Group 1, the control group, received no Shilajit, group 2 received 250mg per KG body weight of Shilajit every day and group 3 received 500mg per KG body weight of Shilajit every day. The subgroups (Each group contained 1 subgroup) in groups 1, 2 and 3 determined whether or not the rats were artificially harmed by administering very high doses of 'isoproterenol'. A high dose of 'isoproterenol' simulates a heart attack. After 7 days of supplement
mentation with Shilajit, 'isoproterenol' was administered to induce cardiac damage in the affected subgroups.
on the 8e day, the heart health of the subgroups was determined using the following parameters:
- Arterial pressure
- Mean arterial pressure
- Maximum contraction speed
- Maximum relaxation speed
It is striking that with regard to heart health there was virtually no difference in the subgroups that did NOT receive 'isoproterenol'. However, researchers were pleasantly surprised that the Shilajit-supplemented groups, which DID receive 'isoproterenol', had a lot less heart damage than the control group. The control group that received 'isoproterenol' had much lower heart health values compared to the Shilajit supplemented groups WITH 'isoproterenol'!
The researchers concluded that Shilajit has a protective role when a heart attack occurs. The researchers are still undecided about the mechanism responsible for the protective role that Shilajit plays in heart health. More research is needed to establish this mechanism.
Effects of Shilajit on type 2 diabetes patients
A double-blind placebo-controlled study from 2016 investigated the effects of Shilajit on the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. Diabetic patients often suffer from poorly functioning blood vessels (endothelial dysfunction) which can lead to cardiovascular disease . The endothelium is a thin layer of cells that lines the inside of our blood vessels. The endothelial cells play an important role in regulating blood flow, maintaining blood pressure and preventing blood clots. When endothelial function is disrupted, this can lead to narrowing of the blood vessels, impeding blood flow.
60 patients were selected who took a Shilajit supplement or a placebo for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, several parameters related to the risk of cardiovascular disease were looked at, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels and the function of the blood vessels.
The results showed that the group supplemented with Shilajit during the study showed an improvement in endothelial function and had lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels than the placebo group. It is good to mention that no side effects of Shilajit were found during the study.
The research suggests that shilajit may have a positive effect on cardiovascular disease risk in patients with type 2 diabetes by improving endothelial function and lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
Shilajit may possibly increase the contraction force of the heart
The research "Effect of shilajit on the heart of Daphnia: A preliminary study" aims to investigate the effects of shilajit on the heart of the water woodlouse Daphnia. Daphnia is a small organism commonly used in medical research due to its resemblance to the human heart.
In the experiment, shilajit was administered to Daphnia and then the heart rate and heart contraction force of the organisms were measured. The results showed that shilajit significantly increased the contractile force of the heart in Daphnia. This indicates that shilajit may have a positive effect on heart health.
